Bodor Laser introduces a new AI standard: classification of laser machines L0-L5

Bodor Laser has published the AI Laser Cutting Machine Classification White Paper, a structured system for determining and evaluating the level of artificial intelligence in laser cutting equipment. The document aims to clarify the term “AI-cutting”, which manufacturers are increasingly using in marketing, although a clear industry criterion for it still did not exist.

What is an AI machine according to Bodor

, automated functions by themselves do not yet make an AI machine. This AI machine, according to the White Paper, completes the technological cycle offive components:

  1. perception -data collection on cutting conditions;
  2. analysis – evaluation of these conditions by the system;
  3. decision – making -selection of the optimal cutting strategy;
  4. execution — implementation of the decision into action;
  5. self-optimization -improvement based on accumulated data.

Scale L0-L5: who makes the decision

at the heart of the classification-one question: who actually makes the decision during cutting, the operator or the system.

Level title who solves the
problem L0 without intelligence Operator only basic mechanical functions
L1 help Operator System helps with individual tasks
L2 partial intelligence Operator (final solution) The system generates recommendations, input threshold for the”AI” status
L3
(2027)
conditional intelligence System Stand-alone solution in well-defined
L4
(2029)scenarios
High intelligence System full autonomy in certain scenarios
L5
(2031)
Full intelligence System full autonomy in all conditions
The L2 level is defined as an input threshold: for a machine to be considered an “AI laser cutting machine”, it must simultaneously have allfive basic abilities and reach L2 or higher.

How to use this scale when choosing a machine

Previously, “AI-cutting” in the description of equipment could mean anything from simple autofocus to a system that actually makes decisions without operator involvement. Now there is a concrete benchmark: the level on the L0-L5 scale immediately shows how many decisions the system takes on, and how much is left to the operator. It is enough to ask the manufacturer or representative what level a particular model corresponds to — and compare the equipment not by advertising wording, but by actual functionality.

Bodor Laser Plans

the company has released a schedule for the transition of its own line to higher levels of autonomy: L3 — until 2027, L4-by 2029, L5 – by 2031.
